Who is she
This winner of the 1995 Miss Asia Competition was born in Shanghai but migrated to Canada with her family at the age of 11. Kristy Yang Gong Ru’s route to stardom occurred while the pretty lass with porcelain-like features was reading Commerce at a university in Canada. Kristy was on a holiday with her mother in Hong Kong when mom encouraged her to take part in the beauty pageant. It was a turning-point in her life when the green-horn was crowned Miss Asia. The former shrinking violet has certainly come a long way from those days of yore when she would shy away from eager reporters. Nowadays she fields questions with poise and finesse.

What is she famous for

An anomaly from the usual league of former Miss Asia-turned-Category-Three-Starlets (e.g. Weng Hong, Li Qing, etc), Kristy Yang is a respectable up-and-coming actress appearing in acclaimed movies like Comrades, Almost A Love Story (she plays the bride from China to Leon Lai's character). Her role in The StormRiders ( ·ç ÔÆ) as a girl torn between two lovers may just give her acting career another boost.

Future Role Model
It looks like Kristy could well follow the footsteps of Maggie Cheung, another beauty queen-turned- thespian. Like Kristy, Maggie too emigrated with her family to an English-speaking country (England) in her childhood, only to return to the Pearl of the Orient to join the Miss Hong Kong beauty pageant and seek her fortunes in the flourishing entertainment industry. So, Kristy, take heart: there is hope for beautiful "flower vase" after all!
